My TV Cabinet/Fireplace and a Christmas Present Too!

I added these two pic's to show you where the cabinet is in my living rm, some had asked where I was putting it (; So there you go, this view is looking into the living rm from my dining rm.Make sure you keep scrolling down to see the rest of the pic's because now they are out of order (:

I am sure that alot of you struggle with decorating around your tv, well for Christmas we bought each other a new flat screen tv, I am sure when Jeff said sure lets get it, he had no idea that remodeling our tv cabinet would be involved, but why would he expect anything different right, LOL. So where my huge tv use to sit in between the two cabinets, I had this bright idea of attaching my fireplace there and adding a shelf to place the tv on, I wanted it to look like built ins on either side of it. So after cutting down my fireplace and adding a new shelf and adding the new tv, now I'm not so sure I like it, oops, sorry Jeff ); What do you girls think, thumbs up or down?? I also never showed you a pic of my pink bike my Mom bought me for Christmas, I love it, and my basket that Becky from Lace and Lures gave me when we got together, goes so perfect on it.

  1. Kelly,
It looks great! I think it depends upon where you place it in your room. Also you may want your hubby to add doors to the tv part so when the doors are closed it just looks like a fireplace. See a few posts back on my blog to see if you like it that way. Just a thought.

  2. I do like it. I agree with maybe adding doors to cover the tv when not in use. Very creative too.

  3. Ok...I am in love with the pink bike. I would love an old bike for my backyard. Oh, you thought I might ride it?....no, it is all about ambiance....!!

  5. I love your new bike! The basket looks perfect on it.

And I really think the fireplace/TV combo looks great. I read the suggestions about putting doors to cover the TV, which I think is a really nice idea. Of course if your home is anything like ours, the doors would never be closed. lol I always forget to close our TV armoire and then the kids get home from school and want to play Wii so it ends up open all day anyway!

I say live with it for a few weeks and see how you feel. Sometimes when I change things around here it takes me some time to settle into it. Like my mind has to adjust to the change in scenery.

  6. I love that pink bike!!!
I'm torn on the cabinet fireplace. It's a great idea, but I tend to be one to like a fireplace to stand alone...away from cabinets, shelves and tv's. :0(. I'm thinking if you put the doors on it to hide the tv when not in use, it could look even better, but again, would that distract one from the fireplace?
See, I do like it but...I have this whole fireplace issue. I know whatever you decide it will look great (cuz you're just like that) and it will serve the purpose you need it to. So, do you have any ideas on how to hide a "whale"? I have a 52" big screen in my living room and I hate it! Love to watch it but it takes up my whole room! Hubs won't part with it, so I'm trying to figure out ways to get a cabinet around it and make it more "appealing". sigh*

  8. Hi again Kelly! I'd say a definite Thumbs Up!!! You don't even notice the tv!!!! The bike is gorgeous! I'd leave it inside for a decoration and never get it dirty outside!!! Have fun - Sincerely, Jeannette

  10. Well here is my two cents....I am not a fan of TV cabinets anymore. I used to really like them in armoires but now that flat screens are all the rage, I really like them mounted on the wall. That is what we did with ours in the family room. Do you have a wall where you could mount it and it would look nice?? Also I am into a cleaner look nowadays so I tend to like the less is more. I don't know...just my thoughts.

And by the way your living room looks fabulous!

  11. Hey Kelly,
I just had a thought, it would look really nice just mounted above the fireplace alone...do you think?

  12. I think it looks nice. You may want to "live with it" for a while or even "play with it" -- splitting up the cabinets from both the TV and fireplace and trying different positions. I know some people like their TV over the fireplace but I wouldn't do that in my home because our mantel is too high and we would have to look up all the time. I like the TV mounted on the wall but not sure if we will do that when we get around to getting the bigger digital/HD TV or not -- mainly because of the expense and non-flexability of a wall mount. I'm the TV person in our home - not my hubby - with HGTV on most of the time if I'm not watching movies or the DVR so not having the TV covered doesn't bother me at all. Your home is beautiful and the pink bike is so funny!

  14. ok....the burning question from me (no pun intended)....is that a portable fireplace! How cool! I've never seen one!
I like the set up the way it is!

  16. Kelly..you always have great instinct.

I for one love it! We have a built in and the TV is too large so it just hovers outside of it...I wish I could have done it differently.

Above my fireplace looked too high....

I think it looks amazing and if you want you could fashion doors, but the easier way would be to enclose it with some cute curtains.....

It looks great open though. Aren't our living rooms meant to be LIVED in? The tv is the ONE thing my hubby loves and I will give him his one little enjoyment, LOL

You can always move things around but I think it is another terrific example of your great taste!!

I want your bike....I found an old Shwinn at an antique store that is calling my name...it is not pink though.

  17. I LOVE your cabinet! If I could do that in my house, I would do it in a heartbeat, as I think it is the most beautiful tv cabinet I've ever seen! I think it fits in so well in your lovely home.

    Love that pink bike too!

  18. I love your living room, and especially the new fireplace/tv arrangement. So cute. :-)
I recently bought an old fireplace mantle and thought about actually putting a flat screen TV inside since we don't have a fireplace. Haha Then I could play a "fireplace" DVD when I wasn't watching anything...a little cheesy, I know. :-)

  19. Kelly, I'm going to tell you right now. I have never seen anything look as good as this before. I believe its because of the way the design is on your pieces. Sure theres units made for this type of thing, but not like yours. I'm serious, this looks fabulous. I'm putting this on my favorite photos.. Personally this is a like a inspirational picture for me...I'm not sure about the closed in doors for the tv. It could look to boxy. But then again, it may look nice....I do though like the way it is thats for sure. I guess you'll have to play with it.

  20. Kelly,
I love how you did that. Very creative. I need help doing something with my t.v. It is huge...but the kids love it. I have it in the family room which I have decorated in shaby chic. The t.v. is black and such an eyesore!! Is it ok to paint a t.v.? LOL Paint always helps everything else!!

I love your pink bike. I want one too! Thanks for stoping by and leaving the sweet comments.

  23. Kelly, I love the new cabinet! What a gorgeous piece. Your hubby did a wonderful job on it! It looks built in! Just beautiful, I would love to have something like that!

  24. Hi Kelly!!

Sorry , its been such a busy week! But OMG, it looks gorgeous!! I cannot believe you made that unit out of those pieces!! I truly thought it was ONE built in! You go girl! and as for the bike?? all I can say is WOW :) Im so glad you got one, its sooooo cool! Im so happy for you :)!

I love the layout and the built in, it makes everything look so organized and pretty at the same time! How is it for viewing ? with the longer couch facing the window , is it ok for you? I agree though, I like the longer couch there to break up the rooms though. Have you tried the whole unit on the other side and the love seat facing it?

Honestly, right now I love how it looks though, its hard to see in the picture if it's centered in the grouping, is it?

  26. Hi Kelly,
I think you nailed it with the placement of your entertainment center because it isn't the 1st thing that you look at coming in your home. So the tv isn't your first look altho I know alot of guys who would say Awesome TV!!
I love the picture and the rest of the mantle shelf that you placed on that wall and with the new placement of your dining room I can only see in my mind's eye how pretty that view must look.
Tell your hubby he did a great job with the new entertainment center.
It is awesome too. Did I get long winded or what...lol
    Beautiful job
Now maybe when we get established in your area we can go for a bike ride.
    Hugs

  27. HI sweetie :) Its me again :)

I just wanted to let you know, my flat Screen TV isn't mounted so that the wires are hidden either. I was too afraid to the that if I have to take it back for some reason or better yet, move it :) But what I did was, I have an Ivy plant in front of it and it hides the wires perfectly :) There is about 8-10 inches between my TV and the Mantel, and the wires all hang down in the middle, so I used electrical tape to pull them a bit together, and painted it Merlot ( like my wall ). Then put the potted plant ( not real, lol ) there and moved around the Ivy a bit to make sure nothing was seen and it hides it :)

The Flat screen TV's always pose an issue with my clients too, so we are no different. It just requires some tweaking and you can get a great look! xoxo

  28. So did you tell hubby about what you're thinking now? Was he mad? I'll bet he totally understood...right?
My big screen is 52" and sits on the floor. I was thinking of raising it off the floor with a long table we have and then seeing if we can build a cabinet around it but I'm afraid that might be to much...grr, I hate the way tv's look. They just throw off the whole "feel" in my livingroom.

  29. OH MY GOSH! My hubby and I want a flat screen TV and I've been dragging my feet because the entire decorating thing AROUND IT has scared me off!

  30. I think it is pretty, but I don't know how you watch t.v. It seems too high and your heads would have to be turned if sitting on the nice new full sofa. I wonder if you might like it better on your buffet that is directly across from your big sofa. We bought our flatscreen t.v at the same time as our sofas, so we bought a armoir from IKEA that our t.v fits perfectly in. It was a great price at $299. It is a dark choc. brown which goes well in Sea Cottage, but I think it came in maple too. Not white though, but you could always paint it! I'm not sure if they still sell it. You can look on my blog to see what it looks like. I just recently posted a pic of it entitled 'morning light' (I think, something like that).

One more thing...I think I liked your fireplace better on its own.
